Detecting Manufacturing Defects in Glass Products

February 15, 2018

At the very initial stage of glassware, they are exposed to gaining defects in them. The manufacturing process involving heating, forming and cooling introduces strain and stress into the glass products. Invisible to the naked eye, the strain never-the-less is present and is a potential point of failure in the glass apparatus unless relieved. The amount of strain present will be determined by a number of factors including the intensity and size of the torch flame, glass wall thickness and the complexity of the seal itself. The severity of the stresses may be enough to cause glass failure. In order to detect these minute flaws projected in glass wares, accurate testing machines such as Polariscope can be used.

This testing instrument is basically an optical machine used to identify the defects in the material due to its manufacturing components. Glasswares facing the introduction of strain and stress may get deformed or even get cracked. This can hugely affect the quality of the product and thus decreasing the price of the product drastically. Hence, it serves the purpose of quality management and quality control.

Polariscope strain viewer is easy to use the device. It works on the principle of changing the refractive index of the light. Materials like plastic and glass do not refract the light double. But can behave in this manner is subjected to the external force causing internal stress.  This can be seen, by placing the sample under the polarized lens. The light which is mounted under one of the lenses passes light through the material, which is viewed through the lens placed opposite the light. There is no external display. Test results can only be visually observed and logged manually for records.

It is suited for a range of applications in the optical strain viewing field of the glass industries. Photo-elasticity is a major phenomenon that occurs in Glass products. Photo-elasticity means the change in the refractive index of the material when there is non-uniform strain distribution throughout the material. Photo-elasticity can be a great problem for the manufacturers of glass products as this is a great flaw in the quality of the products.
