How to Check the Basic Qualities of Corrugated Boxes?

June 5, 2017

The strength of the board is the prime factor that defines how strong box should be. There are certain queries that you must put before yourself to accurately assess to adjudge how strong the box has to be to fit for use in intended applications.

  • The nature of the materials that are being packed
  • How the boxes will be stored in the warehouses, what would be the stacking load
  • Total weight of the box
  • The dimensions of the box
  • The conditions in which transportation will be done

Due to their flexible and adaptable nature, corrugated boxes are much popular in the packaging industry. Their testing is the significant part of the quality assessment. Despite utmost care, there are harsh conditions what continuously affect the box throughout the transit. Jerks, wrenches, impacts, top load, stacking load etc. are some external factors that may create stress on the contents inside. Therefore, different tests are performed on boxes to determine the suitability for the application.

Box compression test

In this test, the storage condition of warehouses is simulated. In warehouses, boxes are stacked to utilise the space in an efficient manner. Similarly, in box compression tester, a load from the top is applied on the box until deformation occurs. How much force is applied to deform the sample is calculated and displayed on the screen.

Drop Tester

This is a very basic test and mandatory as well. In this test, the box is made to fall from a certain height without any human interference. The box is placed on a platform whose height can be adjusted according to intended usage. At a certain height, the sample is made to fall free on the ground by using a remote control. How much deformity occurred will be checked by a visual inspection. Earlier, this test was performed without using any machines. The quality managers have realised that the more human interference in the test the more inaccurate test results will be, this gives the idea of the inception of drop tester.

Vibration Table

Corrugated boxes are made for making transportation easy. During transportation, boxes experience external forces that generate vibrations. For instance, if the cargo is being delivered by train, there will be constant vibration in the consignment boxes. It is very important to understand how long the boxes will be able to bear these forces and to what the contents present inside will be protected. Presto Group offers a vibration table. It simulates vibrations and other similar movements in the table, on which box sample is placed. A visual inspection is done to check the effects of vibrations.
